Data suggests that around 90% of pregnant women, 70% of adolescent females, and 40% of adolescent males (those who actively participate in sports) develop stretch marks (1).

Stretch marks are formed when your skin is stretched beyond its limits. While there is no way to escape them, there are ways to make your skin resilient to prevent stretch marks or reduce their intensity. This article discusses ways to help prevent stretch marks and reduce their appearance.

How To Prevent Stretch Marks: 10 Tips To Follow

You can develop stretch marks at any point in your life. If you are at risk of developing stretch marks (we have discussed the risk factors later in the article), here are a few things you can do to reduce the risk:

1. Moisturize Your Skin

Proper moisturization improves the elasticity of your skin. It is assumed that moisturization may help reduce the impact of stretch marks and even prevent them.

A study done on pregnant women found that the application of moisturizers reduced the severity of the stretch marks. The study noted that moisturizers (like oils and vitamin E) were used in the ointment. The ingredients may or may not have any add-on effects (2).

2. Up Your Intake of Vitamin D

A study found that low levels of vitamin D in human serum increased the risk of developing stretch marks (3). However, the study is inconclusive, and more research is needed in this regard.

You may try to include more vitamin D-rich foods in your diet. Make sure you consult a doctor.

3. Manage Your Weight

Maintaining a healthy weight is key to prevent stretch marks. When you gain weight quickly, your skin is stretched rapidly, and this often causes stretch marks. You may also notice stretch marks after you lose weight quickly. Bodybuilders, adolescents experiencing a growth spurt, and pregnant women may experience quick weight gain and loss.

If you want to prevent stretch marks, it is crucial that you gain or lose weight gradually (if you are trying to gain or lose weight), giving your skin a chance to recover. Also, if you are pregnant, try to maintain a healthy weight. Consult a doctor to understand the ideal weight for you.

4. Drink Plenty Of Water

Staying hydrated is crucial to reduce your risk of developing stretch marks. On average, you need close to 2 liters (64 fluid ounces) of water. This measurement may vary depending on the hydration needs of your body. If you are pregnant, consult a doctor to know the right amount of water intake for you.

5. Avoid Corticosteroids

Corticosteroid use and abuse (oral and topical) are linked to stretch marks (2). Bodybuilders often take steroids to expand tissues and build muscles, which may stretch the skin and leave marks.

Corticosteroids are used for health conditions, such as asthma, eczema, Crohn’s disease, colitis, etc. If you are taking corticosteroids, consult your doctor for ways to prevent stretch marks.

6. Follow A Balanced Diet

It has multifaceted benefits. Following a healthy diet can help you maintain your weight. Eating fresh fruits and vegetables (containing high water content) helps to maintain the hydration levels in your body. Moreover, the nutrients and vitamins in foods can help keep your skin healthy. All these factors may help in preventing stretch marks.

7. Exercise Regularly

Staying active helps you maintain healthy body weight. Also, exercising under the supervision of an instructor can help you build muscle strength gradually, without stressing your skin. This may help prevent stretch marks.

8. Use Sunscreen

Sun rays can damage the collagen fibers in your skin (4). Collagen supplements (along with elastin) keeps the skin tight and elastic. While using sunscreen may not improve the appearance of stretch marks, it can protect your skin from UV rays and prevent further risk of developing stretch marks.

9. Avoid Smoking

Exposure to tobacco smoke causes elastin breakdown (5). Smoking can deteriorate lung function and affect skin elasticity. It also makes you prone to developing stretch marks.

10. Treat Early Stretch Marks

Fresh stretch marks (or red stretch marks) are easier to treat than old or white stretch marks. Prompt action may not make them vanish but can reduce their appearance to a great extent.

These are the preventive measures you can take. However, if you develop stretch marks, treating them in the early stages can improve their appearance. Here are the treatment options you can consider.

Treatments To Reduce The Appearance Of Stretch Marks

1. Laser Therapy

Several studies found that laser therapy could help improve the appearance of stretch marks. A non-ablative1540-nm fractional laser was found to improve the appearance of stretch marks by 1% to 24%. A 1064-nm long-pulsed Nd:YAG laser was found to be beneficial in improving red stretch marks (2).

2. Microneedling

Microneedling is another effective way of improving the appearance of early and late stretch marks (6). A study showed that microneedling with topical ascorbic acid (vitamin C) could help in improving the appearance of stretch marks, and 85.8% of the patients studied were satisfied or very satisfied with the results (7).

3. PRP Injections

According to a study, PRP (platelet-rich plasma) injections were effective in improving the appearance of stretch marks (8). The plasma is derived from the blood of the patient and triggers healing (by boosting collagen and elastin production) in the target area.

4. Microdermabrasion

Microdermabrasion involves removing the top layer of your skin with a small handheld device. This helps to renew skin texture and tone. Studies have found that microdermabrasion could help improve the appearance of stretch marks (2).

5. Retinoid Ointments (Tretinoin)

Tretinoin is beneficial in improving the appearance of early stretch marks. In a randomized, open trial, researchers found that 0.05% tretinoin cream helped reduce the severity of the red stretch marks (2).

6. Glycolic Acid

This alpha hydroxy acid can be beneficial in improving the appearance of stretch marks when used in a higher percentage. A study found that 70% glycolic acid improved the appearance of stretch marks after six months of continuous use (9).

These tips can help prevent stretch marks. They also help prevent early stretch marks from turning severe. While all of us can develop stretch marks, there are a few among us who are more likely to develop them. Being aware of the risk factors can help you stay prepared.

Stretch Marks: Pregnancy And Other Risk Factors

Factors that make you vulnerable to stretch marks are:

1. Pregnancy

This is the most common factor that makes a woman vulnerable to stretch marks. When you are pregnant, not only your body but your skin tissues also undergo changes. As your body starts to make room for the growing fetus, you develop stretch marks.

Usually, stretch marks start appearing during the sixth and seventh months of pregnancy, and 50% to 90% of pregnant women develop them (10). These marks may appear on the abdomen, thighs, and breasts.

2. Genetics

If you have a family history of stretch marks, it is likely that you will develop them too.

3. Quick Weight Loss/Gain

If you tend to gain or lose weight quickly, the constant stretching and tugging can give rise to stretch marks. If you are overweight and trying to lose weight, or you are underweight and trying to gain weight, do it gradually.

4. Steroid Medications

Using corticosteroids for a long time can cause the development of stretch marks. Steroid medicines lower the collagen levels in your skin. As a result, your skin may not be able to stretch itself, and you develop stretch marks (11).

5. Breast Augmentation

If you have undergone surgery or are taking pills to increase the size of your breasts, you may develop stretch marks as your skin has to stretch itself to accommodate the fat transfer or implants.

6. Health Conditions

Some health conditions like Marfan Syndrome and Cushing’s Disease can also cause stretch marks (12), (13).

Stretch marks usually fade on their own or become less noticeable with time. It depends on the rate at which your skin recovers.

Most of us are not comfortable flaunting our stretch marks and prefer hiding them. These lines are a reminder of how our body has grown and changed throughout our lives. Be comfortable in your own skin and appreciate the struggle it has gone through. Talk to a doctor to identify the method best suited for your case.

7 Best Essential Oils For Stretch Marks

Stretch marks usually fade with time, though the severe ones don’t. No treatment can make them disappear completely, but they can improve their texture and appearance. Essential oils are popular home remedies for many skin issues, including stretch marks. However, there is no scientific proof supporting the efficacy of essential oils for stretch marks. Most of the remedies involving essential oils focus on replenishing and moisturizing your skin. That is how they are said to reduce the appearance of stretch marks. In this article, we have discussed the best essential oils you can use to treat your stretch marks.

Can Essential Oils Reduce Stretch Marks?

The answer is, maybe.

There is not enough scientific evidence supporting the efficacy of essential oils as a treatment option for stretch. There is only anecdotal evidence claiming the positive effects of different essential oils in reducing stretch marks. Different essential oils have different skin-improving effects. When mixed with other ingredients, especially oils, they may have a positive effect on your stretch marks.

A study conducted on pregnant women found that the topical application of emollients and moisturizers can improve the appearance of stretch marks (1). Moreover, the topical use of plant oils (fixed oils) keeps your skin healthy and moisturized (2). These might be the reasons for the positive effect of essential oils on stretch marks.

However, the results also depend on your skin type, so not everyone may experience the same effects. If you want to try essential oils for stretch marks, check out the list given below.

Best Essential Oils For Stretch Marks

Note: These essential oils have different skin benefits and may not have any direct effect on the stretch marks.

1. Bitter Almond Oil

There is no study supporting the efficacy of bitter almond oil for the reduction of stretch marks. One study found that it has no direct effect in reducing the appearance of early stretch marks in pregnant women. However, massaging the affected area with any oil for 15 minutes daily may help reduce stretch marks (3).

2. Tea Tree Oil

No scientific research has been done on the effect of tea tree oil on stretch marks. But, this essential oil has multiple skin benefits. It has antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties that keep your skin healthy and prevent multiple skin issues. However, it can also irritate your skin and cause allergic reactions, so be careful while using tea tree oil (4). Do a patch test to find out if your skin can tolerate it.

3. Bitter Orange Oil

Bitter orange is commonly used in traditional Chinese medicine. It is effective in treating multiple health-related issues. When applied on the skin, bitter orange oil may help improve skin issues such as jock itch, ringworm, and athlete’s foot (5). Anecdotal evidence suggests that it could also help treat stretch marks.

4. Lavender Oil

Lavender oil is widely used for aromatherapy to relieve stress, anxiety, and pain. A study done on rats found that lavender oil promotes collagen synthesis to heal wounds (6). Thus, it may also trigger collagen synthesis in humans, which could help reduce stretch marks. However, more research is required for human subjects to prove the same.

5. Neroli Oil

Neroli oil is commonly used for multiple dermatological issues such as dry skin, wrinkles, acne, dermatitis, eczema, psoriasis, and scars. It is used to treat stretch marks and maintain the overall health of the skin (7).

6. Patchouli Oil

When studied on mice, patchouli oil was found to be effective in preventing photoaging. It prevented wrinkle formation and reduction in elasticity and improved collagen formation (8). This collagen-boosting property of patchouli oil may help in the treatment of stretch marks.

7. Frankincense Oil

Frankincense oil is widely used in Ayurvedic and traditional Chinese medicine for maintaining overall skin health. It helps in wound healing and stimulates the fibroblast (the cells that produce collagen) (9). Therefore, it may be of some help in treating stretch, though there is no scientific evidence that proves the same.

All these essential oils have specific skin benefits. When you mix them with other oils, they might help in reducing stretch marks.

How To Use Essential Oils For Stretch Marks?

The best way to use essential oils is by mixing them with carrier oils. This is because essential oils are very concentrated and can irritate your skin if not diluted. Some carrier oils that you can use are:

  • Argan oil: Improves skin elasticity and skin hydration and repairs skin barrier (10)
  • Rosehip seed oil: Protects the skin from inflammation and oxidative stress (10)
  • Pomegranate seed oil: Has antioxidant properties (10)
  • Coconut oil: An emollient that keeps your skin hydrated (11)
  • Grapeseed oil: Has antibacterial and wound-healing properties(10)
  • Jojoba oil: Prevents skin infections and skin aging and promotes wound healing (10)
  • Olive oil: Promotes wound healing by stimulating dermal reconstruction (10)
  • Sweet almond oil: Can stop the stretch marks from itching and prevent them from spreading (10)
  • Apricot kernel oil: An emollient that keeps the skin healthy (12)
  • Wheat germ oil: Contains vitamins A, D, and E that supports the skin’s natural regeneration process (13).

The National Association for Holistic Aromatherapy suggests a standard dilution rate for essential oils (14).

In 1 US fluid ounce carrier oil (2 tablespoons), you may use:

  • 15 drops of essential oil for 2.5% dilution
  • 20 drops of essential oil for 3% dilution
  • 30 drops of essential oil for 5% dilution
  • 60 drops of essential oil for 10% dilution

It is best to start with a lower dilution rate. So, start by adding 2-3 drops of essential oil in a tablespoon of carrier oil, then increase the dilution as per your skin tolerance level.

The usage of essential oils during pregnancy is hotly debated and still being studied. One of the main concerns is that the essential oils may penetrate the skin and reach the placenta. Find out more about this below.

Is It Safe To Use Essential Oils During Pregnancy?

The International Federation of Professional Aromatherapists has specific guidelines for using essential oils on pregnant women (both for massage and aromatherapy). The main concerns are the quality of the oil used and the risk of the oil crossing the placental barrier. However, if used in proper dilution, the chances of these oils harming the fetus are low (15).

The recommended dilution of essential oils for pregnant women is not more than 1% for topical application.

Since pregnant women are sensitive to smell, 1% dilution is well tolerated. Since the skin of pregnant women is sensitive, they are recommended to avoid tea tree and chamomile oils (15).

If you are pregnant, do not use any essential oil without consulting your doctor. Discuss your medical history with the doctor, and use essential oil only after proper assessment and getting a go-ahead from them.

Applying essential oils on the skin or inhaling them may trigger adverse reactions. So, be careful about these risks.

Side Effects And Risks of Using Essential Oils

An allergic reaction is the most common side effect of using essential oils (16). The common symptoms of an allergic response include:

  • Hives
  • Rashes
  • Itching
  • Redness
  • Nausea

Some essential oils may also cause dermatitis (17).

Citrus essential oils also cause sun sensitivity and make your skin prone to sunburn and rashes (16). That’s why you must use essential oils under the supervision of a doctor.

Stretch marks are tough to erase. While some essential oils and carrier oils may help reduce the appearance of stretch marks to a great extent, studies are lacking to prove their efficacy. How well your skin responds to these oils also depends on your skin type and the severity of the stretch marks. If the marks are severe and old, it is difficult to get rid of them. Moreover, it also depends on how early you are starting the treatment. Usually, fresh (red) stretch marks respond to treatment.

Ultimately, it comes down to how you take care of your skin and your overall health. Try to maintain a balanced diet and a healthy lifestyle so that you do not lose or gain weight quickly. Keep your skin and body hydrated.

We hope that this information helps you deal with your stretch marks. If you have any more queries, drop them in the comments section below, and we will get back to you.

Red Stretch Marks: How To Treat Them

Your skin is elastic, and it can be stretched. However, when it is stretched farther than it is used to, it scars and creates a stretch mark. These marks appear as a band of lines on your skin. Initially, these stretch marks appear red. They gradually change color and turn white. Stretch marks are easier to treat and fade when they are fresh or red. Curious to know how? Scroll down to read more about red stretch marks and ways to get rid of them.

What Are Red Stretch Marks?

What Are Red Stretch Marks

You might have noticed red lines on your stomach, thighs, arms, or any other body parts. These red lines are red stretch marks or striae rubra. This is a common skin condition that is caused by overstretching the skin. Overstretching your skin damages the elastic fibers in your skin.

Fresh stretch marks usually appear red due to the skin in that area becoming thinner. As a result, the blood vessels present beneath the skin become visible and the stretch marks appear red. However, the redness fades away and the color of the stretch marks changes with time.

Several factors are responsible for the overstretching of skin.

Causes Of Red Stretch Marks

1. Pregnancy

Women usually develop stretch marks during pregnancy. The fibers in the skin around the belly become soft and stretch to make room for the developing fetus. As the embryo grows, the skin stretches and develops stretch marks.

2. Growth Spurt During Puberty

Often, adolescents experience a sudden and rapid growth spurt when they hit puberty. At that time, their body grows and either loses weight or gains weight quickly. This sudden stretching and contracting may leave stretch marks.

3. Rapid Weight Gain Or Weight Loss

When you gain weight in a short period of time, your skin stretches suddenly and develops stretch marks. The same happens when you try to lose weight quickly and go on a diet. That’s why it is advisable to lose or gain weight gradually so that it does not strain your skin.

4. Genetics

If you have a family history of stretch marks, you too may develop them.

5. Corticosteroids And Medications

Using corticosteroids for a long time can bring down the level of collagen in your skin. This affects your skin’s ability to stretch, and you become prone to developing stretch marks.

6. Body Building

When you are trying to build muscles, the rapid growth of muscle mass can also stretch your skin and create stretch marks.

7. Medical Conditions

Rare health conditions such as Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, Cushing’s syndrome, and Marfan’s syndrome may also cause stretch marks due to various physiological factors associated with the conditions.

You do not get stretch marks on your hands, feet, or face. There are specific body parts where you usually get stretch marks. Check them out below.

Common Body Parts Where You Get Red Stretch Marks

You are most likely to get stretch marks on your:

  • Thighs
  • Breasts
  • Belly
  • Hips
  • Buttocks
  • Abdomen

You may also notice stretch marks on your lower back and on the back of your arms. You are most likely to get stretch on the parts where your body stores more fat.

Red stretch marks are easier to treat as the skin in that particular area can still produce collagen, which can cover up the marks. However, once the stretch marks become old and turn white, it is tough to treat them. With proper treatment, the marks may not go away entirely but fade to a great extent.

How To Treat Red Stretch Marks

Here are some remedies that can help fade red stretch marks.

1. Medical Procedures And Treatment Options

I. Microdermabrasion

Microdermabrasion is one of the best ways to deal with red stretch marks. Multiple studies have found that microdermabrasion can help improve the appearance of red stretch marks (1). Microdermabrasion is the process in which a wand-like device with a crystal tip is rubbed on your skin to buff the top layer. This helps make your skin smoother.

2. Microneedling

The needles in the microneedling device poke the skin to boost collagen production. A study done on Korean women found that microneedling can improve the appearance of early stretch marks (2).

3. Laser Therapy

Treating red stretch marks with 1064-nm long-pulsed Nd: YAG laser was found to be effective in improving their appearance. It not only reduces redness but also boosts collagen production, thus improving the appearance of the stretch marks (1).

4. Topical Creams

Tretinoin creams have been found to improve the appearance of red stretch marks. However, they may also cause irritation, redness, and peeling. Pregnant women should also avoid using tretinoin creams (3).

Emollient oils are also beneficial in treating and preventing red stretch marks. Applying emollients helps improve skin elasticity, which prevents and treats early stretch marks. One anti-stretch marks ointment that was studied in Romania included emollient ingredients like argan oil, cocoa butter, and beeswax (4).

5. Chemical Peeling

In this process, skin acids are used to peel away the top layer of your skin, revealing a smoother surface. This might help in gradually fading red stretch marks, though the efficacy of this treatment is unknown (3).

You may even try at-home remedies to treat your red stretch marks. However, there is not enough scientific evidence that these at-home treatments will give you results.

II.  At-Home Treatment Options

1. Creams And Lotions For Stretch Marks

There are topical creams and lotions available for fading stretch marks. There is no scientific proof for the efficacy of these products and their ability to fix the torn elastic fibers in your skin. However, these creams can moisturize your skin, which may reduce the appearance of early stretch marks.

2. Almond Oil

You can prevent the formation of stretch marks by massaging your skin with almond oil (5). It helps keep your skin moisturized and improves its elasticity. This prevents stretch marks even when your skin stretches during pregnancy.

3. Hyaluronic Acid

As per the American Academy of Dermatology, applying hyaluronic acid on early stretch marks may help reduce their appearance. It can help fade them and make them less noticeable (6).

4. Keep Your Skin Moisturized

Apply emollient ingredients like cocoa butter and beeswax to keep your skin moisturized and prevent stretch marks (4). You may even consider massaging your skin with other emollients such as shea butter, virgin coconut oil, or any other plant oils. Though there is no evidence that these ingredients reduce or prevent stretch marks, they can keep your skin moisturized. This might help in reducing the appearance of stretch marks.

5. Check Your Diet

This is important to prevent sudden weight gain and prevent stretch marks. Try to eat a healthy and balanced diet and avoid junk food. A diet rich in essential vitamins and nutrients also keeps your skin healthy.

Other than these treatments and remedies, there are a few quick fixes for hiding stretch marks that you can use if they are bothering you:

  • Self Tanners: These are available in the form of creams, lotions, and sprays and usually used to give your skin a tanned look. They can help even out your skin tone and hide the stretch marks for a few days.
  • Body Makeup: You may use body makeup to hide your stretch marks. However, remember to use waterproof and transfer-proof makeup so that it stays on your skin even when you are in a humid environment.

Although there are many treatment methods that claim to help you get rid of red stretch marks, the truth is that you cannot make them disappear completely. With proper care and treatment, the marks may only fade and become less noticeable. It is always best to consult a dermatologist to understand the way your skin heals and responds to treatment.

If you have any more questions about red stretch marks and how to treat them, drop them in the comments section below and we will get back to you.

Expert’s Answers for Readers Questions

Do red stretch marks fade?

Yes, they fade if treated properly.

How do I know if my stretch marks are new?

If your stretch marks appear reddish, they are newly formed stretch marks.

Bollywood Movies That Taught Us The True Meaning Of Love

$

There’s no denying that Bollywood has given many of us a hard time accepting that love doesn’t always come in the form of Shah Rukh Khan. For those of you who identify as die-hard romantics, Bollywood has probably been a godsend. Tales of love have spanned from the advent of Bollywood in the year 1913 (Yes, Bollywood is older than Independent India) to the current era of modern day love stories with their own unique and spicy twists. What better way to celebrate the day of love, than sitting down with your loved ones (yes, friends count too) and binging this list of romantic and interesting Bollywood movies:

1. Veer-Zaara

Veer-Zaara

perfbolly / Instagram

The fruits of love bloom between a young Indian pilot and a girl from Pakistan named Zaara. Their love story turns complicated when Veer is left to languish in a Pakistani prison for 22 years and Zaara believing he’s dead, spends her life looking after the village of his origin. Theirs is a tale of love, separation, sacrifice, and courage. The movie culminates with Veer and Zaara finally being reunited and realizing their feelings for each other never went away.

2. Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Naa

Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Naa

chillmaarnaayaar / Instagram

Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na introduces us to two best friends, Jai and Aditi who are total opposites in terms of personality but really care for each other. While everyone around them believes they’re perfect for each other, they never seem to see it as they want different things from their partners. Despite finding their so-called ‘perfect partners’, the pair are left unhappy when they discover that they actually love each other deeply. What follows is a series of hilarious and seemingly odd twists that eventually have the pair finding their way into each other’s arms.

3. Kal Ho Naa Ho

Preity Zinta plays the role of Naina who is an introverted, pessimistic young girl coping with the loss of her father to suicide. Her life changes drastically when she meets a man named Aman. But Aman himself is not what he seems to be and harbors a deep, dark secret. Rohit, Naina’s best friend conceals his love for her after he finds out she loves Aman. The movie ends with a bittersweet twist that leaves the audience in tears.

4. Pyaasa

Pyaasa

vintagelover143 / Instagram

A major life lesson this movie teaches us is to never judge a book by its cover. Waheeda Rehman plays a kind-hearted young prostitute named Gulabo who falls for a talented young poet who seemingly dies. Gulabo goes out of her way to ensure his incredible work is published and the pair are reunited when the poet resurfaces. He realizes people only wanted to be around him for the wrong reasons and thus decides to give up all material possessions and run away with Gulabo.

5. Dil Chahta Hai

The modern love story between Sid and his older neighbor Tara is truly one that has its bittersweet moments. In a surprising role reversal, Tara plays an alcoholic who drinks to deal with the pain of her divorce and Sid is a young artist who is so enamored by her beauty and persona that he enlists her to be his muse. While Tara does end up having to face the brunt of her alcoholism, the story doesn’t end there. Dil Chahta Hai teaches us that you could lose the one person you loved the most in the world and still move forward in life.

6. Namaste London

Namaste London features Jazz as the lead character, a modern, well-educated and ‘westernized’ Indian woman brought up in London by an extremely patriarchal father. When on a trip to India, Jazz’s father forces her into a marriage with a Punjabi man called Arjun. Peppered with a lot of ‘Hindustani pride’, the movie is all about how Jazz and Arjun deal with each other’s differences and eventually take a stand for each other.

7. The Lunchbox

The Lunchbox

successismyfather / Instagram

The Lunchbox is a beautiful love story between Saajan and Ila whose lives get entangled together after a small mix-up with lunchboxes courtesy of the dabbawala system in Mumbai. What follows is a unique story of two lost souls who write each other letters and send them through the lunchboxes until they finally decide to meet up. The movie has its ups and downs and has a fair share of emotional bits.

In Conclusion

Sure, Bollywood often gets hate for showcasing love in a bad light (Cough cough Rahul Khanna). Bollywood has also had some incredible love stories that seal our belief in the idea of love and finding that one true person who makes it all worth the hassle. Which is your favorite movie? Netizens’ Blood Boils After Yogi Says Menstruating Women Who Cook Will Be Reborn As ‘Bitches’

It is the 21st century but our country seems to remain regressive when it comes to women. Like it or not, as Indians we are not strangers to absurd statements from “enlightened” leaders. Just when we think India is making progress; a yogi comes along and says something so ridiculous that we cannot help but wonder if they can use their brains for something other than nonsensical gyaan. Believe it or not, Swami Krushnaswarup Dasji, a leader of an educational institution in Gujarat said in his sermon that menstruating women who cook will be reborn as bitches. We are just as astounded as you are!

Netizens' Blood Boils After Yogi Says

Source: FirstPost

Recently, in a college in Bhuj, Gujarat, 68 young girls were humiliated by college authorities when they asked to take off their undergarments to prove that they were not menstruating. When the news of this preposterous incident got out, people everywhere were filled with rage and expressed their disgust. In a time when people are fighting for gender equality, this kind of mentality is intolerable and rightly so, the college received a lot of flak from netizens.

Unfortunately, this was not the end; the Shri Sahajanand Girls’ Institute (SSGI) sis run by Swaminarayan Bhuj Mandir sect and the spiritual leader of the sect, Krushnaswarup Dasji, proved that they are a misogynistic and conceited sect. During one of his preachings, he said that if you eat the food that is made by a woman who is menstruating even once, you will be born as an ox in your next life (cow is holy, but being an ox is a punishment?). Not only did he say something so bizarre but he had some more “insightful” ideas about rebirth.

The swami said that men should learn how to cook before getting married. No, not because modern marriages require an equal partnership but because a menstruating woman who cooks food for her husband will be reborn as a kutri (bitch). He stated that it is better for a man to cook for those days when their wives are menstruating to avoid rebirth as an ox. Not only did he mock women and their natural bodily functions, but he also added that it has been said so in the shastras (scriptures). It is appalling to see such brazen statements coming from a yogi who believes in a religion that has more than a 1000 goddesses. If a female idol can be worshiped for her holiness, why are women degraded for basic biology?

Twitterati Reacts

When the news reached the internet, Twitter users blew up with rage. They expressed their fury and pointed out the misogyny with no leaf unturned. One user tweeted saying who will tell him that he spent the first nine months of his life in a sac filled with menstrual blood. Another user mocked him by saying that if that is the case, there will be a lot of cross-breeding between oxen and dogs next birth. Here are a few more hilarious reactions:

While a few users mocked him and used humor as a tool, some of them expressed their disgust and called the swami out for his misogynistic mentality. One user said, “This disgusting & regressive mindset that aims to push a gender behind another will be the end of progress in our country.” Here are some Twitter users who were outraged by this and expressed their anger:

More About The College

SSGI is located in Bhuj, Gujarat and is run by people who preach such wise words of wisdom. (Hope you understand the sarcasm.) According to reports, a rule prevalent in the college hostel is that women who are menstruating should not eat along with other inmates but a few women allegedly broke this rule.

More About The College

Source: The Print

It was reported by an inmate that more than 60 women were taken to the washroom by a female staff member and were asked to prove if they were on their period or not. They were ordered to remove their underwear to prove this and disgraced by their college. Disgusted and flabbergasted by this incident, local authorities arrested four people who were associated with this humiliation and booked under the Indian Penal Code. The principal of SSGI Rita Raninga, rector of the girls’ hostel Ramilaben Hirani and college peons Naina Gorasiya and Anita Chauhan were all arrested by the authorities. They were booked under IPC sections 384 (extortion), 355 (assault with intent to dishonor a person) and 506 (criminal intimidation).

As disappointing and demeaning this incident was to all the women in our country, we are happy to see that an action has been taken by law. As for their spiritual guru, Swami Krushnaswarup Dasji, he might not realize how insensitively bizarre he sounds, but we are certain that he needs education and awareness more than “enlightenment”.

As leaders and spiritual gurus, they have a moral obligation to impart the right knowledge among their followers. It is unacceptable that they blindly say the most bizarre thing out there and expect people to accept it without retaliation. As educated women, we have the opportunity to voice our concern and fight for our rights. However, young women from rural areas are the ones who face the brunt of such a mentality. They are unaware of their rights and are shamed for something natural. This results in various diseases due to the ignorance of menstrual health. As the privileged lot, it our duty to stand up for those women who do not have a voice and fight for what is right, even if that means questioning our so called “leaders”.

#Throwback To The 70s: Bollywood’s Most Women Empowering Era

Ah, the 70s. The era of Dum Maaro Dum and Jawani Jan-E-Man. While Bollywood baddies like Amitabh Bachchan, Rishi Kapoor, and many others dominated the big screens, actresses were not far behind. Many of Bollywood’s leading ladies took cinema to great lengths by playing bold roles and were not afraid to show some skin in a country that expected it’s actresses to hide behind their ‘Ghoonghat’. Here is a list of actresses who defied societal pressures and won the hearts of millions through their incredible acting chops:

1. Rekha

Rekha

rekha.fc / Instagram

Bhanurekha Ganesan was born on October 10, 1954, to popular Tamil actor, Gemini, and popular Telugu actress, Pushpavalli. As a child, Rekha’s family life was extremely tragic and she had to start acting in South Indian films from a very young age as her family was not well off. Her inability to speak Hindi, darker complexion as well as weight made it a little difficult for her to get roles in Bollywood initially. She made her debut in Bollywood during the 1970s with Sawan Bhadon under the name of Rekha and the movie blew box office records making her an overnight success. The actress received widespread acclaim and enjoyed success throughout the decades and her roles won her a lot of fame and attention.

2. Zeenat Aman

Zeenat Aman

Zeenat Aman was born on November 19th, 1951. She was an only child and her folks separated when she was very young. An alumnus of Saint Xavier’s school in Bombay, Zeenat won a grant to study in California. Zeenat was the third decision for the addict ‘Janice/Jasbeel’ character in Dev Anand’s Hare Rama Hare Krishna which also featured himself and Mumtaz. Zeenat portrayed the ganja smoking, free-spirited character of Janice/Jasbeel. The film was a monumental hit and Zeenat won the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actress. Zeenat proceeded to change the Hindi film industry. She was one of the few actresses who rejected bouffants, donned a bob, rarely wore saris or bindis and carried off a bikini in an era when western clothes were still considered taboo. Her characters were always bold, independent and modern.

3. Hema Malini

Hema Malini

Born to Tamil parents in a small district of Tamil Nadu, she first performed as a dancer in a 1961 Tamil film. Initially deemed “too skinny” by many regional film directors, Hema persevered and was paired with Raj Kapoor in Sapnon Ka Saudagar only 4 years after getting rejected. Sadly, the movie was a flop. However, the actress persevered and went on to star in nearly 155 films. From that point, there has been no turning back for the lady who was popularly known as the “Dream Girl” of Bollywood. She was among the first Bollywood leading ladies to wear shirts and bell bottoms in Hindi films.

4. Parveen Babi

Parveen Babi

Brought up in Junagadh, Parveen was noticed by eminent B.R. Ishara at Ahmedabad University, and he asked her to audition for his film, Charitraheen. Her co-actor was none other than Salim Durrani, the famous Indian cricketer. Parveen Babi lit up the cinema with her enchanting looks and powerful characters from the 1970s. Some of her critically acclaimed hits with megastar Amitabh Bachchan are, Kala Pathar, Namak Halal, Deewar, and Amar Akbar Anthony. She moved to the USA for ten years and seemed to have taken an indefinite break from acting. When she came back to India, she was a changed woman. The once bubbly and talented actress fell into the trap of paranoid schizophrenia and eventually died alone in her Mumbai flat after she suffered a diabetes-related ailment.

5. Shabana Azmi

Shabana Azmi

mughalsandmavens / Instagram

Shabana Azmi was one of the few women to rule the movies of the aptly-titled “Parallel Cinema” during the 1970s and 1980s. Shabana has acted in films by some of India’s most talented directors, including Satyajit Ray, Shyam Benegal, Aparna Sen, Mrinal Sen, and others, where she had channeled strong female leads in Godmother and Mrityudand: The Death Sentence. Shabana Azmi was often paired with Rajesh Khanna and they starred in 7 fruitful movies. She is noted for force on-screen, coordinated by her furious support of women’s rights, minorities, and street urchins off the screen, both through advocacy and in her job as a Parliament Member.

6. Jaya Bachchan

Jaya Bachchan

hindustantimes / Instagram

Jaya Bachchan ventured into acting when she was just 15 and acted in a Bengali film called Mahanagar. She gained a solid foothold in Bollywood when her film, Guddi was released. She proceeded to act in numerous Bollywood films, including blockbusters like Bawarchi, Uphaar, Abhimaan, Anamika, Sholay, Jawani Diwani, and Chupke Zanjeer. Her acting career spanned many years but she quit acting after 1981 and only came back for Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham.

7. Smita Patil

Smita Patil

_prat / Instagram

Smita Patil was an alumnus of the prestigious Film and Television Institute of India and she made her debut in veteran director Shyam Benegal’s Charandaschor. Some of her most prominent roles were in the movies Aakrosh, Manthan, Mirch Masala and Bhumika. Alongside Shabana Azmi, she was one of the prominent faces of the new age, new wave cinema in India. In her movies, her characters represented a sense of feminine intelligence, which was very whimsical in those days, in the wake of living in a male-overwhelmed society. Unfortunately, the actress met her demise at a young age after suffering complications from her delivery. Her son, Prateik Babbar went on to become an actor himself and her legacy lives on through him.

There’s no denying that Bollywood has come a long way since the 70s, but the women of that era seemed to have a charm rarely found in actresses in today’s day and age. Although India was still a young and conservative country, these women defied the odds and changed the face of the industry. Who is your favorite veteran actress? Let us know in the comments below.

13 Types Of Drunken Friends We All Have

Our friends are the family that we choose and thank God we have an option like that! We grow up with some of them, go to high school and college with them, fight, laugh, cry, and make memories with them. And if you think about these memories, many of the great ones didn’t happen when you were sober. That’s the best part about getting drunk with your friends, right? Be it a party animal night or a Friday evening at a friend’s apartment, alcohol stories are fun and dramatic. Well, not all of them are fun and we certainly have friends who we wish don’t get drunk ever.

Here’s a list of different types of drunken friends that we all have (we’re sure you too can relate yourself to one or more of these).

1. The Philosopher

The Philosopher

While drinking alcohol can definitely lighten up the mood for many of us, there are a few rare personalities whose thoughts become extra dense after getting drunk. They start talking about world hunger and the multi-faceted meaning of life. While most of us won’t understand half of the things, we still keep nodding to them (only because we’re drunk too).

2. The Michael Jackson

via GIPHY

These friends start to dance the moment they get tipsy and they’re truly the best entertainers out there. At first, it can be quite shocking, but after a few episodes of drinking with them, you’ll get used to it; you might even start dancing along with them! And yes, you can call them Michael Jackson, but in reality, you know that they look like a snake in front of a charmer.

3. The Sleeping Beauty

The Sleeping Beauty

Ah, the one friend who gets high even on breezers. This friend will just go to sleep after a few drinks; no drama no crying for mama. But we really wish they’d spend more time with us, don’t we?

4. The Crybaby

via GIPHY

This is your Devdas friend who digs out their pain after a few shots of vodka. The topic might range from ex-partners to bankruptcy and they kill your mood faster than a Dhinchak Pooja song. Try to calm your friend down (which might seem impossible) or put them down to sleep so that the event doesn’t turn into a sob fest.

5. The One Who Says “Aaj Kuch Toofani Kartein Hain”

The One Who Says “Aaj Kuch Toofani Kartein Hain”

The overly excited drunk who always want to do something “different”, “fun”, and “adventurous” in their own words. This is the guy/ girl who wouldn’t mind trespassing the neighbor’s compound and steal their chappals at 2 AM. If you’re inviting this friend over for drinks, make sure you keep them inside the house so that you don’t land in trouble. And it’s very easy to identify these friends because evidently, they’ve gotten themselves as well as others in trouble before.

6. The “Funny” One

via GIPHY

For some, alcohol can activate their funny bones. These friends become the life of the party if it’s a party without very loud music. And you’ll have a great time recollecting some funny old stories and watching your friend do some memorable impressions. Keep these friends close because they can help you loosen up your mind after a tough week.

7. The Aggressive Drunk

The Aggressive Drunk

Shutterstock

These people shouldn’t really drink because they get all aggressive when they do. They become over emotional and tend to pick up fights and create complicated scenarios that would make everyone else uncomfortable. We really don’t know if they do it on purpose or if they just want a reason to vent it out on others.

8. The Drunk Dialer

The Drunk Dialer

Call it a prank or an indirect way to talk to your ex, some people reach for their phones as soon as they finish their first drink. They text, call, or send emotional quotes about relationships to their exes or partners. Some of them even ring up random old friends just to ask how they’re doing (at 4 in the morning)! Are you a drunk dialer?

9. The Puker

via GIPHY

The puker— needs no further explanations; you know who they are. And also, stock some Dettol and cleansing liquid before you invite them home on a Friday night.

10. The Flirty Drunk

This is the friend who suddenly turns into Johnny Bravo after a couple of beers. They start getting all flirty and sometimes make you uncomfortable as well.

11. The Clingy “Best Friend”

via GIPHY

“I’d do anything for you my friend, and you know that, don’t you?” It sounds aww but imagine that coming from someone who’s hanging down your shoulders (LOL!). These friends get clingy and are so much in love with you after a few mugs of Budweiser.

12. The Arjit Singh

We’ve all got that one friend who starts singing once they’re drunk. The choice of the song depends on their mood; it could range from happy party songs to sad, unrequited love songs that’ll make you reach for the tissues to stuff them into his/ her mouth.

13. The Trouble Magnet

via GIPHY

This is your friend, or friend of friend who’s always getting your whole gang into trouble. Sure there are a million ways for people to get in trouble and this person seems to have mastered almost all of them.

While some of them are adorable and the rest are annoying, drunk friends are the best, aren’t they? And the best part of all of it is that you feel the happiest when you spend time with your close friends. Drinking with them is better than drinking with a date any day, right? Ever thought what kind of a drunken friend you are? If not, share this article with your friends and let them decide!

Polka Dots

Polka dots for bachelorette parties are perfect. It is that one night when the bride lets loose for the very last time, before her big day. She has an exciting girl’s night with her bridesmaids and closest friends where they share drinks, eat yummy food and dance like crazy. The bride-to-be also gets lots of presents (we love that part!). Bring in that 19th-century look by wearing polka-dotted dresses, skirts or even a saree if you’d like.

2. Floral Prints

Floral Prints

You could add a tiara to the mix and feel like a princess if you are the bride-to-be.

3. Anarkali

Sassy and quirky, this look makes you set a trend that is sure to catch on. Wedding ceremonies like mehendi and sangeet generally happen during the day when the sun is shining in all its glory. Coconut Oil for Stretch Marks – Benefits And Uses

$

0

Coconut oil is an excellent moisturizer and bactericidal and has multiple skin benefits. It is mainly due to the presence of free fatty acids, including lauric, palmitic, oleic, and linoleic acids (1). Coconut oil is also widely used to improve the appearance of stretch marks. However, it cannot erase them. In this article, we will discuss how coconut oil may help and how you can use it for stretch marks.

Does Coconut Oil Work For Stretch Marks?

It may help. There is no scientific evidence to prove that coconut oil can help reduce stretch marks. However, coconut oil can help improve the appearance of the stretch marks.

A study states that the application of emollients and moisturizers is critical in improving stretch marks (2). Well-moisturized and hydrated skin is more elastic than dehydrated skin. Keeping the skin moisturized may help minimize the occurrence of stretch marks and also prevent them.

Coconut oil may help reduce stretch marks due to the following benefits:

  • It has moisturizing properties: Coconut oil is an excellent moisturizer. It helps improve the skin barrier by reducing transepidermal water loss (TEWL) or loss of water from the epidermis, thus keeping the skin hydrated (3).
  • It boosts collagen development: It stimulates fibroblasts and promotes collagen production (which is vital for wound and scar healing) (4).
  • It protects the skin from UV damage: It protects the skin from the harmful effects of UV exposure (which is crucial for scar recovery) (4).
  • It is anti-inflammatory: It has anti-inflammatory effects and can protect your skin from inflammatory conditions, such as atopic dermatitis and eczema (5).

These properties of coconut oil (especially virgin coconut oil) can keep your skin healthy and may also help in minimizing the appearance of stretch marks. If you want to use coconut oil for pregnancy stretch marks or any other stretch marks, here are the ways to use it.

How To Use Coconut For Stretch Marks

Note: Use only virgin coconut oil. If you are pregnant and want to try out any of the recipes listed below, you must consult a doctor.

1. Coconut Oil

Coconut oil helps to keep the skin moisturized and may reduce the appearance of stretch marks.

You Will Need

1 tablespoon of virgin coconut oil

Method

  1. Warm the coconut oil in the microwave for a few seconds (if it is solid).
  2. Massage the warm oil onto the affected area gently for 5-10 minutes.
  3. Leave it on overnight and wash off the next day.
  4. Repeat this every day.

2. Coconut Oil And Aloe Vera

Aloe vera has a moisturizing effect on the skin (6). Along with coconut oil, it can keep the skin healthy and minimize stretch marks.

You Will Need

  • 1 tablespoon of virgin coconut oil
  • 1 tablespoon of fresh aloe vera gel

Method

  1. Warm the coconut oil for a few seconds in the microwave.
  2. Mix the aloe vera gel and oil well.
  3. Massage it gently onto the affected area for 5-10 minutes.
  4. Leave it on overnight.
  5. Repeat this every day.

3. Coconut Oil And Castor Oil

Castor oil contains ricinoleic acid, which has skin-conditioning effects (7). This combination can help keep the skin moisturized and soft.

You Will Need

  • 1 teaspoon of castor oil
  • 1 tablespoon of virgin coconut oil

Method

  1. Mix the two oils. Warm the coconut oil if needed.
  2. Massage the mixture onto the affected area for 5-10 minutes.
  3. Leave it on overnight.
  4. Repeat every day.

4. Coconut Oil And Turmeric

Turmeric helps to boost collagen development and can help treat psoriasis and other skin conditions (8). While its effect on stretch marks is not well-researched, it can contribute to skin health.

You Will Need

  • ½ teaspoon of turmeric powder
  • 1 tablespoon of virgin coconut oil

Method

  1. Mix the turmeric powder and coconut oil.
  2. Massage the mixture gently onto the stretch marks.
  3. Let it stay for at least an hour (be careful not to stain your clothes).
  4. Wash it off and apply a moisturizer.
  5. Repeat this every day.

5. Coconut Oil, Salt, And Sugar

Salt and sugar work well as scrubbers due to their coarse texture. Scrubbing helps to get rid of dead skin cells. While there are no scientific studies to establish the benefits of salt and sugar for stretch marks, anecdotal evidence suggests that they can help reduce the appearance of these marks.

You Will Need

  • 1 teaspoon of salt
  • 1 tablespoon of sugar
  • 1 tablespoon of virgin coconut oil

Method

  1. Mix the salt, sugar, and coconut oil.
  2. Massage the mixture gently onto the affected area for 2-3 minutes.
  3. Leave it on for half an hour.
  4. Wash off and follow up with a moisturizer.
  5. Repeat this every alternate day.

6. Coconut Oil And Olive Oil

Although olive oil was found to negatively affect the TEWL rate of the skin and make it dry,  it was found to promote wound healing in mice studies (9). Along with coconut oil, it may keep the skin moisturized and help with stretch marks.

You Will Need

  • ½ teaspoon of virgin olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon of virgin coconut oil

Method

  1. Mix the two oils.
  2. Massage the blend onto the affected area.
  3. Leave it on overnight and wash off the next day.
  4. Do this every day.

7. Coconut Oil And Tea Tree Oil

Tea tree oil helps in wound healing and reduces skin infection (10). However, its effect on stretch marks is not documented. It is believed that its anti-inflammatory and wound healing properties can reduce the appearance of stretch marks.

You Will Need

  • 2-3 drops of tea tree essential oil
  • 1 tablespoon of virgin coconut oil

Method

  1. Mix the two oils.
  2. Massage the blend well onto the stretch marks.
  3. Leave it on for an hour and wash off.
  4. Follow up with a moisturizer.

8. Coconut Oil And Shea Butter

Shea butter contains tocopherol, phenols, and sterols and has anti-inflammatory properties. Shea butter products were found to have similar efficacy as products containing ceramides (11).

You Will Need

  • 1 tablespoon of shea butter
  • 1 tablespoon of virgin coconut oil

Method

  1. Massage the mixture onto the affected area.
  2. Leave it on overnight.
  3. Repeat every day.

9. Coconut Oil And Lemon Juice

There is no scientific research that establishes the efficacy of lemon juice for stretch marks. However, this widely used ingredient has a bleaching effect on the skin, which may help reduce the appearance of stretch marks.

You Will Need

  • ½ teaspoon of lemon juice
  • 1 tablespoon of virgin coconut oil

Method

  1. Massage the mixture onto the stretch marks.
  2. Leave it for at least half an hour.
  3. Wash off and apply moisturizer.
  4. Do it once every day.

10. Coconut Oil And Baking Soda

It is not recommended to apply baking soda on the skin due to its abrasive effect. However, it is a popular home remedy and is used for exfoliation. Anecdotal evidence suggests that the harsh nature of baking soda may help improve the skin texture of the stretch marks. Avoid this recipe if you have sensitive skin.

You Will Need

  • ½ teaspoon of baking soda
  • 1 tablespoon of virgin coconut oil

Method

  1. Mix the baking soda and coconut oil well.
  2. Massage the mixture on the scars for a few minutes.
  3. Leave it on for 5-10 minutes and wash off.
  4. Apply moisturizer.
  5. Repeat this twice every week.

11. Coconut Oil and Coffee Scrub

Coffee grounds have a coarse texture and are excellent for scrubbing the skin. The effect of scrubbing on stretch marks is not known yet. However, you may try this recipe for exfoliation.

 You Will Need

  • 1 teaspoon of coffee grounds
  • 1-2 tablespoons of virgin coconut oil

Method

  1. Mix the coffee grounds with the oil.
  2. Massage the mixture onto the affected area gently for 5 minutes.
  3. Leave it for another 10 minutes.
  4. Wash off and apply moisturizer.
  5. Repeat this twice a week.

12. Coconut Oil And Vaseline

Vaseline is occlusive. When applied, it prevents the moisture from escaping your skin, thus helping in maintaining hydration (12). However, due to its occlusive nature, it also does not allow any other ingredient to penetrate your skin. Using Vaseline and coconut oil together may not keep the skin moisturized, but layering coconut oil with Vaseline might help.

You Will Need

  • 1 tablespoon of virgin coconut oil
  • 1 teaspoon of Vaseline

Method

  1. Massage the affected area with coconut oil.
  2. Wait for 5-10 minutes and then apply Vaseline to the area.
  3. Leave it on overnight.
  4. Repeat this every day.

13. Coconut Oil And Egg White

Egg white is a popular home remedy and is used in face masks as it makes the skin tighter. There is no scientific proof that it works on stretch marks, but you may try this popular remedy if you want to.

You Will Need

  • White of one egg
  • 1 tablespoon of virgin coconut oil

Method

  1. Mix the egg white and coconut oil.
  2. Apply the mixture on the stretch marks.
  3. Let it stay for 10-15 minutes.
  4. Wash off and apply moisturizer.
  5. Repeat it once daily.

14. Coconut Oil And Vitamin E Oil

Vitamin E helps to stabilize the skin barrier and is a potent antioxidant (13). Together with coconut oil, vitamin E can keep the skin healthy and may also improve stretch marks.

You Will Need

  • 1-2 vitamin E softgels
  • 1 tablespoon of virgin coconut oil

Method

  1. Squeeze the liquid from the softgels.
  2. Mix the coconut and vitamin E oils.
  3. Massage the blend onto the affected area.
  4. Leave it on overnight.

15. Coconut Oil And Camphor

Applying camphor to the skin induces an increase in blood flow (14). However, its effect on stretch marks is not known. Camphor may help improve blood flow to the affected area and improve the overall appearance of the skin.

You Will Need

  • 2 drops of camphor oil
  • 1 tablespoon of virgin coconut oil

Method

  1. Mix both the oils.
  2. Massage the blend gently onto the affected area.
  3. Leave it on for 2-5 minutes.
  4. Wash it off and apply moisturizer.

These are the ways you can use coconut oil to reduce stretch marks. Although coconut oil is considered safe to use for the skin, you need to be aware of the associated risks.

Side Effects And Risks Of Using Coconut Oil On The Skin

Virgin coconut oil is considered a non-skin irritant, and it is also non-phototoxic, which means it will not make your skin vulnerable to sun damage (3).

Pregnant women can also use it topically on their abdomen to prevent severe stretch marks (after consulting their doctor).

However, if you are allergic to coconut, your skin might react to it. The common signs of an allergic reaction include:

  • Hives
  • Rashes
  • Itchiness
  • Redness
  • Burning sensation
  • Skin irritation

Hence, it is better to check if you are allergic to coconut oil before proceeding with any of the above methods. Also, it is recommended to use virgin coconut oil and not the refined variants available on the market. Refined oils might contain additives that are harmful for the skin.

There is not much scientific evidence regarding the efficacy of coconut oil or any other ingredients mentioned in the recipes for treating stretch marks. Most of it is anecdotal. But coconut oil may help enhance overall skin health, which may help reduce the appearance of stretch marks. Make sure consult your doctor, especially if you have sensitive skin or are pregnant.

Stretch marks are normal are not a health concern. But if you do not feel comfortable, you can try out these treatments to minimize their appearance.

Expert’s Answers For Readers’ Questions

They had a beautiful wedding at the Umaid Bhawan Palace in Jodhpur, India. Priyanka and Nick had two wedding ceremonies for which she wore a traditional red lehenga designed by Sabyasachi and a mind-blowing white dress designed by Ralph Lauren. Both the outfits were customized to hand-stitch her hubby’s full name and her parents’ names on to them. Priyanka’s gown had a 75 feet long trail and she looked like a fairy in a dramatic movie. They tied the knot in Borgo Finocchieto, an 800-year-old village-turned-villa in Tuscany and it was truly magical to see how happy the couple was. Virushka, as they are called by fans, performed their nuptial rights under a canopy of exquisite flowers flown in from Holland. 7 Of Bollywood’s Most Under-rated Masterpieces

While many people define the success of a film by the money it makes at the box office, there’s a lot more to it. Many times, brilliant movies are overlooked by the fact that they didn’t star big shot actors or aren’t directed by a big name in the industry. And in some cases, movies are overlooked for simply discussing topics that might not be considered mainstream. So we at StyleCraze decided to compile a list of 7 under-rated Bollywood masterpieces from the past two decades.

1. Iqbal (2005)

Iqbal

anumit_01 / Instagram

Shreyas Talpade plays the titular role of Iqbal, a deaf and mute boy born in a poor agrarian family. He dreams of being a cricketer but his father isn’t so keen on his dreams and wants him to take on the family profession and toil the land. Luckily for Iqbal, he has the support of his mother and younger sister. Eventually, his skills are noticed by a washed-up, alcoholic, ex cricket player and the story ensues. This movie is a must-watch for all those who are passionate about cricket.

2. Margarita With A Straw (2015)

Margarita With A Straw

lgbtkerala / Instagram

Margarita With A Straw is a beautiful movie about self-realization, self-actualization, and self-discovery. It deals with a young woman suffering from cerebral palsy who rebels against her family to pursue her dreams of studying in New York City. While in New York, she meets a blind Bangladeshi-Pakistani woman named Khanoum and the two enter a relationship. This is a beautiful story about love, loss and the bond between a mother and her child. It deals with issues like LGBTQ+ relationships, cheating, cancer and more topics that are considered taboo. We’d recommend keeping the tissues handy. You’re most definitely going to need them after watching this film.

3. Water (2005)

Water is a beautiful and empowering tale of widowed women living in an ashram and chronicles their lives throughout the movie. It talks about how women in a pre-independent India were treated as burdens and discarded by their husbands’ families after the deaths of their husbands. We see the movie play out through the eyes of many characters, the most prominent of whom is an 8-year-old girl named Chuyia who was married off to a much older man. Unfortunately, the girl’s “husband” dies right after the wedding and his family, not wanting to take responsibility for her abandons her at the ashram.

4. Delhi Belly (2009)

Delhi Belly

a_movie_bufff / Instagram

If you thought you had bad luck, you haven’t seen anything yet! Imran Khan plays the character of a broke journalist, Tashi, who along with his equally broke roommates, Arup and Nitin gets embroiled in the games of a Delhi gangster. What ensues is a hilarious series of misunderstandings that can only occur in a city like Delhi. Delhi Belly goes from high-speed car chases to Mexican standoffs to 80s styled musical numbers to innuendo and double entendre filled humor in the span of a heartbeat.

5. Dasvidaniya (2008)

Dasvidaniya

Source: Twitter

Dasvidaniya follows the story of a 37-year-old middle-class accounts manager named Amar Kaul who works at a pharmaceutical company. His life is flipped over when his upset stomach turns out to be stage three cancer and he makes a bucket list of all the things he wants to do before he dies. This list ranges from confessing his feelings for a colleague to getting back at his boss for treating him badly to visiting his friend in Russia.

6. Masaan (2015)

Masaan

bongg.bayy / Instagram

Masaan involves two stories. The first one is of a father-daughter relationship that is tormented by a bad decision on the daughter’s part that leads to them being ostracized by the conservative society that they live in. And the second one is an inter-caste relationship set against the banks of the river Ganges. The film talks about what it’s like growing up in a conservative area like Varanasi and deals with the corruption of cops, mistreatment of minors, casteism and many other important topics. Richa Chadha and Vicky Kaushal play lead characters in the movie and are both subjected to various degrees of mental torture throughout their stories.

7. Khosla Ka Ghosla (2006)

Khosla Ka Ghosla

anugoonjmedia / Instagram

The movie starts with an oddly hilarious scene of the lead character, Khosla dreaming about his death. The irony of the dream is that neither his family nor his neighbors care about his death as much as their own selfish and materialistic needs. Khosla sees this as a wake-up call and plans on building a house for himself. Unfortunately for Khosla, he finds out he has been duped by the property seller and someone else has claimed his plot of land. On further investigation, he encounters the scrupulous character of Kishan Khurana and what ensues is a mind-bending game of the most hilarious variety.

Some of the movies on this list did receive praise for their treatment of topics that were considered taboo in our society, but these movies didn’t create as much of a ruckus during their release as they should have. What are your thoughts on this list and what is the one most underrated movie you’ve ever watched? Let us know in the comments below.

Marriage isn’t easy. It’s the bond shared between two people for the rest of their life (or at least the rest of the time they’re married). There are so many problems one encounters in the duration of a married relationship. Some are easy to overcome while others aren’t and some are worth fighting while some are red signals that you should take a clue from. Here are some of the most widely recognized marital issues most couples face and how to solve these issues before unsalvageable harm is caused to the relationship.

1. Infidelity

Infidelity

Infidelity isn’t just your partner sleeping with another person or making out with someone else, infidelity can be physical, emotional or sometimes, both. Many people think that someone having an emotional affair shouldn’t be on the same level as someone physically cheating on their partner, but it’s still not okay. Other things that still count as cheating are: internet relationships, one-night trysts and short/long term affairs. Infidelity is more common than one might think and it can occur for a variety of reasons. Many partners cite lack of action in the bedroom, emotional abuse, retaliation, rage and others as excuses for cheating on their partners. The sad reality of life is that this is a common issue that so many couples struggle with.

2. Values

Values

Just like every other relationship, differences and differing opinions will rise in one’s marriage. However, a few differences are quite vital to ignore, like somebody’s core beliefs and core. One partner may follow a certain religion while another might not believe in god at all. One partner may follow a certain political ideology while another might have a more liberal mindset. This often gives rise to differences and disagreements in a marriage. They may even cause an emotional chasm to rise between the pair. As is obvious, your spouse may eventually get tired of constantly agreeing to your way and decide to do things separately. These types of marital problems are often commonplace when two people from different cultures decide to get married. Other differences between the pair include having different core values.

3. Life Arenas

Life Arenas

Rather than setting age as a deadline for major life decisions like marriage, further education and more one should consider life arenas. Someone can be 25 and be in the same life arena as a 30 year old simply because they’re emotionally mature or more financially stable than the 30 year old. Being on the same page about what you want before you decide to tie the knot is an extremely important thing. This is a common problem faced by married couples that share a large age gap between each other. Personalities can often change as time moves on and wants and needs often change as well. Couples who might’ve been compatible at some point in life may not be compatible in the near future.

4. Traumatic Incidents

Traumatic incidents can put a major strain on a relationship. For couples, these sorts of incidents can sometimes put a couple in a make or break situation. This is also difficult when one is in a codependent relationship with their partner. They might not know how to function if their partner is in the hospital or has a family emergency that they need to attend to. Sometimes, one partner may require constant care and this can cause them to become extremely dependent on their partners.

5. Stress

This is a common problem in any relationship and many couples do go through it. Stress can take a major toll on the relationship you share with your spouse. There can be a variety of causes of stress. This could include financial, family problems, mental illnesses, and more. Sometimes these problems are interconnected (eg: financial issues because your partner may have lost their job) and stress can be triggered by many things.

6. Envy

Even if you both love each other as much as you do, it’s important to realize that you both are different and have your own ups and downs. Envy is never going to get you anywhere and instead of feeling envious, you should be proud of your partner for having something that you desire too. And when you acknowledge this, your partner will feel more valued and they will realize how their achievements and life in general is something that you admire. On the other hand, if you feel jealous of your partner and try to outrun them in any aspect, life would seem like a competition with you competing against your own teammate.

It’s okay to admit to having problems within your marriage. After all, nobody’s perfect and it’s okay to make mistakes every now and then. What would be helpful for your marriage is listening to your partner’s side of the story as well and perhaps opt to go for couple’s therapy. Do you agree with our list? Bollywood has been setting trends since it first came into existence and fashion has always played a major role in it. Whether it be, creating style icons like Pooja from Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham or Anjali’s iconic tomboy avatar from Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. Every Bolly film comes with its own fashion statements and trends. To make things easier for you, we’ve compiled a list of fashion staples that became all the rage after they were donned by Bollywood actors/actresses in popular movies:

1. Anarkalis- Mughal-e-Azam

Madhubala stole the hearts of millions when she graced the big screen wearing a striking Anarkali suit. The film was released in the year 1960 and Anarkalis quickly caught on as a trend and became a wardrobe essential for every desi woman. Recently, fashion queen, Sonam Kapoor was spotted rocking a Madhubala-esque Anarkali for a photoshoot with her husband.

2. Polka Dots- Bobby

When Dimple Kapadia made her debut in Bollywood with the movie Bobby, she set tongues wagging when she portrayed Bobby, a poor Chirstian girl who was often skimpily clad (which was shocking for audiences at that time). However, the movie inspired the trend of polka dots and many actresses have actually paid homage to that particular outfit.

3. Dungarees- Kuch Kuch Hota Hai

While most people thought Rani Mukherjee’s ‘Tina’ was the hot one, it was Kajol who inspired the maroon dungarees look to take off. Kajol plays bubbly tomboy Anjali who is head over heels in love with her douchey best friend, Rahul, played by Shah Rukh Khan. While the movie set friendship goals for most 90s kids, it was Kajol’s fashion sense that inspired a generation of tomboys in the early 2000s.

4. Leather Pants- Dil Chahta Hai

Dil Chahta Hai inspired a generation of men to rock spiky hair-dos and wear printed shirts on leather pants. As a matter of fact, the movie turned leather pants into an ultimate fashion statement when it was released. Initially considered to be the domain of hard rock bands and goth women, the style took off once this movie hit the big screens. Well, we’re certainly glad this is one trend that died out!

5. Aztec Prints- Cocktail

When Cocktail graced the big screens in the year 2012, Deepika and Diana, the leading ladies rocked these super cool aztec prints that became all the rage. The designs were printed out on mobile covers, skirts, tops and more. The stunning outfit seemed very Coachella-esque and inspired many to rock these outfits.

6. Big Poofy Hair- An Evening In Paris

Sharmila Tagore impressed many with her bold look in the movie, An Evening In Paris. Not only did the gorgeous actress rock the big poofy hair and striking winged eyes, but she also shocked audiences when she appeared on screen in an itsy bitsy monochrome bikini.

Zeenat Aman plays the character of Janice/Jasbeel, a woman who can set the epitome of 70s fashion with her bell sleeves, oversized glasses, floral prints, rudraksha beads and bell bottoms. This look defined the era of the hippies and proved Zeenat’s taste in fashion (or at least the costume designers) was well ahead of its time.

8. Retro Inspired Sarees- Main Hoon Naa

Sushmita set a million young boys hearts racing as the uber hot college professor, Miss Chandni Chopra in Main Hoon Naa. The actress plays the love interest of Shah Rukh Khan’s character, Ram. All of this comes to a head in a famous scene where Ram daydreams about dancing in big time Bollywood fashion with his professor. Sushmita’s black and white saree in particular is probably the fantasy of every late 90s- early 2000s kids.

9. Block Printed Cotton Sarees- English Vinglish

English Vinglish is a beautiful movie that details a sweet middle-aged lady who has a tough time speaking English and decides to surprise her family by taking them on a trip to the United States. The lead character, Shashi Godbole, played by late veteran actress, Sridevi, is known for her unique, modern yet traditional taste in fashion. The actress flawlessly pairs a trenchcoat, fancy handbag, branded coffee and a simple and elegant cotton saree and blends fluidly into the New York City crowd as if she was almost meant to be there. She truly made a fashion statement of the most traditional yet culturally appropriate kind.

It’s safe to say that Bollywood has always set the tone for fashion throughout our market. The industry churns out fashion just as it does film. Stretch marks are common. They occur in 50%-80% of the population on different body parts and due to various factors (1). They appear as red, purple, or white narrow and long streaks or lines on your skin. New stretch marks are often purple.

Like any other scars, stretch marks are permanent. However, you can improve their appearance with treatment. This article discusses everything you need to know about purple stretch marks and ways to treat them. Scroll down for more information.

What Are Purple Stretch Marks? How Do You Get Them?

Stretch marks develop when your skin is stretched beyond its capacity. A lot of factors (discussed later in this article) can stretch your skin, causing rapid and abrupt changes in the elastin and collagen fibers. Both elastin and collagen fibers support the skin to keep it healthy. The abnormal stretching damages these fibers. As your skin tries to heal itself, stretch marks develop.

During the early stages, the stretch marks may appear reddish and purple. They may also appear pinkish and reddish-brown, depending on your skin tone. Early stretch marks can be a bit itchy and feel slightly raised when you run your fingers on them.

Purple stretch marks do not develop everywhere. They develop on specific parts.

Where Do Purple Stretch Marks Appear On The Body?

The most common areas where you get stretch marks are:

  • Abdomen
  • Hips
  • Buttock
  • Thighs
  • Lower back
  • Breasts
  • Upper arms

Early stretch marks are easier to treat than late stretch marks (also called white stretch marks). This is because early stretch marks respond to treatment. Although you cannot erase them completely, you can improve their appearance and prevent the severity of the marks.

How To Treat Purple Stretch Marks

1. Microneedling

Microneeding may help minimize early stretch marks. In a study, 16 Korean women underwent three treatments at intervals of four weeks. Seven patients showed excellent improvement (43.8%), while the remaining nine patients showed a minimum to moderate improvement. No significant side effect was reported, except for erythema, mild pain, and spotty bleeding (2).

2. Retinoids

Tretinoin (Retin-A) is a prescription medication and a form of vitamin A. It may help reduce the appearance of early stretch marks (3). However, it may cause redness, skin irritation, and peeling. Also, avoid using Tretinoin if you are pregnant.

3. Chemical Peeling

Chemical peels are applied to your skin to remove the topmost layer and dead skin cells. This can make the skin smooth. Doctors may also use chemical peels to minimize the appearance of stretch marks. However, you may need multiple sessions.

4. Laser Therapy

Laser therapy is an effective way to improve the appearance of new stretch marks. In a small study, a 585-nm pulsed dye laser with a 10-mm spot improved the appearance of stretch marks (4). In another study, a1064-nm long-pulsed Nd: YAG laser improved immature stretch marks (5).

People often use natural and home remedies for treating stretch marks. But do they work? Find out in the next section.

Home Remedies For Purple Stretch Marks: Do They Work?

There is no science-backed evidence that states that home remedies can help eliminate stretch marks. Topical remedies may have mild effects. Also, it is not yet clear if the ingredients in topical creams and ointments have any specific effect.

A study found that the moisturizing effect of the creams and ointments might be the reason for the improvement in stretch marks (6). Hence, the best you can do is keep your skin well moisturized. You may use plant oils for this purpose.

The following plant oils may help keep the skin moisturized:

  • Almond oil
  • Coconut oil
  • Sunflower oil
  • Grape seed oil
  • Argan oil
  • Sesame oil
  • Avocado oil
  • Jojoba oil
  • Shea butter

These oils prevent transepidermal water loss from the skin and maintain the integrity of the skin’s natural barrier (7). You can also use hyaluronic acid, which is thought to stimulate the fibroblasts (cells that produce collagen) and keep the skin hydrated (8).

Above all, you have to watch your diet. When you eat healthy food, your skin gets enough nutrients and stays healthy. This can also help you manage your weight and avoid rapid weight gain.

You may also apply hydrating creams and lotions on the marks, but there is no proof that you will get definite results. However, you can use these remedies as a preventive measure to minimize the appearance of stretch marks, especially if you are prone to them. The following factors put you at risk of developing stretch marks.

Who Can Get Purple Stretch Marks: The Risk Factors

You can develop purple stretch marks if:

  • You are pregnant.
  • You experience sudden weight gain/loss.
  • You are a teenager experiencing a growth spurt.
  • You are overweight or obese.
  • You are using corticosteroids.
  • You are a bodybuilder who is trying to build muscle mass quickly.
  • You are dealing with conditions like Cushing’s syndrome and Marfan syndrome.

Is It Possible To Prevent Stretch Marks?

Not always. However, there are a few things you can do to reduce your risk of developing stretch marks:

  • Keep your skin moisturized.
  • Drink plenty of water to keep yourself hydrated.
  • Maintain a healthy weight.
  • Follow a balanced diet. Consume fresh fruits and vegetables to ensure your skin and body get the required nutrients.
  • If you are pregnant, work with your doctor to maintain a healthy weight and follow a proper diet.
  • Exercise regularly so that you can maintain a healthy weight.

Despite trying the suggested remedies and tips, you may not be able to prevent the development of stretch marks. But you can ensure that the scars are not severe by taking good care of yourself. Eventually, they will fade with time.
